The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (established in 1967 as the Department of Mathematics) has always played an important role of providing the teaching of basic mathematics and statistics to undergraduates of various disciplines in many faculties across Hat Yai campus. In addition, the Department also provides many advanced mathematics and statistics courses for undergraduates and graduates in the University
The Department currently has 37 full-time faculty members, including 7 on study leave, approximately 300 undergraduate students, and 8 graduate students. It houses three computer laboratories for students, one of which is specifically for the undergraduate senior projects. Each lecture room in the Department has multimedia equipment set for teaching activities.
The Department has an active colloquium series where faculty members are welcome to present their research work or other academic matters of interest. Speakers from other institutes, both in the country and abroad, are also regularly invited to the seminar. The Department cooperates with many academic institutes in the country. We also have international collaboration with universities abroad such as University of Malaya (Malaysia), Guangdong University of Technology (China) and University of Novi Sad (Serbia). In addition to conducting academic research, some faculty members cooperate with government services and non-government organizations in research for local communities. The Department also provides training courses in mathematics and statistics to other staff within the University and other specific interested groups. Workshops for secondary and high school teachers in the southern area are also annually provided.
